Canto del cigno il primo e unico libro italiano su Marco Van Basten.
L'autore ne ripercorre interamente la carriera. Partendo da tre strane teorie: Van Basten sapeva precipitare; Van Basten era un ottimo cercatore di cavalli; Van Basten non esisteva. Ne nasce molto più di una semplice biografia. Un canto, piuttosto. Un appassionato, non di rado divertito, saggio di estetica calcistica portato avanti da una narrazione ricca, che cerca costantemente la digressione, la fascinazione. L'appartenenza.
In Canto del Cigno, le gesta di Van Basten recuperano tutta la loro bellezza. Dal gol a Dasaev alla quadripletta al Gteborg, dal colpo di testa al Real Madrid alla sfavillante prestazione contro l'Olimpia Asuncin. Emerge l'assoluta eleganza di un giocatore impossibilitato ad avere eredi. C'è anche una dettagliata appendice statistica, che elenca tutti i gol (partita per partita, nel caso delle sei stagioni al Milan) e i premi (tra cui tre Palloni d'Oro) vinti dal calciatore.
Nel libro trova poi spazio il dolore. Le sconfitte, i rari errori. L'ultima partita, a neanche 29 anni. L'autore fa sì che Van Basten non sia mai solo. Nel corso delle pagine si alternano uomini di epoche e ruoli diversi, quasi a comporre un romanzo polifonico (o una partitura concertistica), in un rimando caleidoscopico di suggestioni letterarie, pittoriche, storiche. Swan Song is the first and only Italian book about Marco Van Basten.
The author goes over his whole career. Starting from three strange theories: Van Basten knew how to fall; Van Basten was an excellent horse searcher; Van Basten did not exist. What comes out is much more than a simple biography. A song, instead. A passionate, not infrequently amused, essay of football aesthetics driven by a rich, glowing narration, searching steadily the digression, the charming. The belonging.
In Swan Song, the feats of Van Basten recover all their beauty. From the goal to Dasaev to the four goals to Gteborg, from the header to real Madrid to the sparkling performance against the Olimpia Asuncin. It emerges the absolute elegance of a player prevented from having heirs. In the book there is also a detailed statistical appendix, which lists all his goals (match by match of his six seasons with Milan) and the awards (among them three Golden Balls) won by the player.
In the book then the pain makes a niche for itself. The defeats, the rare mistakes. The retirement, when he was not even twenty-nine-year-old.
The author does never leave Van Basten alone. During the pages men of different ages and roles alternate, composing a nearly polyphonic novel (or a full concert score), in a kaleidoscopic cross-reference of literary, pictorial, historical suggestions. Musical ones. Then, beside football players and trainers, there Van Gogh goes, and Mondrian, Cruyff. Salinger, Maras, Vzquez Montalbn. Jarrett, Vonnegut, Dimitrijevi?. Springsteen, Edberg, Amleto.
And Carmelo Bene, true counter song of the book, who loved Van Basten to such an extent that he defined him the greatest football player of all time. And who, talking about his farewell, wrote: The mourning for his earlier retirement will never die out.

Andrea Scanzi (Arezzo, 1974), detto "Rui", ha esordito con il romanzo Il piccolo aviatore - Vita e voli di Gilles Villeneuve (Limina 2002). Nel 2003 è uscita la sua prima opera non sportiva, C'è tempo (Pequod, prefazione di Daniele Luttazzi). Ha collaborato con Enrico Mattesini ai testi dell'autobiografia di Roberto Baggio, Una porta nel cielo/Il sogno dopo (Limina 2001/03). Ha vinto lo Sporterme 2003, presidente di giuria Gianni Mura, come "miglior giornalista italiano sotto i 30 anni". E' editorialista ne "il manifesto", "il Riformista", "Il Mucchio Selvaggio" e "Il Mucchio Extra". Nello sport ha tre postulati estetici: Muhammad Ali, Stefan Edberg, Marco Van Basten. Questo libro parla del terzo.
