Il piccolo aviatore racconta la sua vita e i suoi voli. Gli esordi sulla neve, le vittorie in Formula Atlantic. L'approdo in Ferrari, voluto dal Drake contro tutti: lui, uno sconosciuto, chiamato a sostituire Lauda. A quello sconosciuto, a quell'aviatore, Enzo Ferrari vorr bene come a un figlio. Il rapporto con Joann, con i figli. I testacoda, gli errori voluti. La scelta di non maturare, di rinunciare alla razionalit, per fedelt insondabile a se stesso.
Le vittorie, mai tantissime. L'inguaribile tristezza sul podio. La sua purezza. L'identificazione oggi impensabile della gente, che lo amer e lo ama come nessun altro. Una vita vissuta con l'acceleratore saldato a terra, come se lo sapesse, l'avesse sempre saputo, che per lui il tempo era gi in scadenza.
Poi, la fine. Il tradimento di Imola, tredici giorni prima di morire. Una Formula 1 ridotta a mattanza, dove i piloti erano martiri e comparse. La disillusione delle ultime ore, il presagio della fine. L'ultimo volo a Zolder, senza aereo n armatura.

He was called the Aviator, because he spent more time in the sky than on earth.
The Little Aviator is about the life and flights of Gilles Villeneuve. The first races on the snow, the victories in Atlantic Formula. The arrival in Ferrari, chosen by Drake against everyone else's opinion: he was unknown, and had to replace Niki Lauda. Enzo Ferrari was fond of him, of that unknown, of that aviator, the way he would have been fond of a son. The book tells his relationship with Joann, his wife, and his child. His choice not to grow, to give rationality for an unfathomable loyalty to himself. His victories, never too many. His incurable sadness on the stand. His purity. The identification, today inconceivable, of people, which love him and will love him like no one else. A life lived with the accelerator always pressed down, as if he knew, as if he had always known, that for him time was expiring.
Then, the end. The betrayal at Imola, thirteen days before his death. Formula 1 turned into a tunny killing, where pilots were martyrs and walk-ons. The disillusion of his last hours, the presage of the end. His last flight at Zolder with neither plane nor armor.
Villeneuve has gone watching the stars, he has gone closing an era.
